Review of Narrow Road to the Deep North

My review of Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan (Read in September 2014)

I have mixed feelings about this book.

I thought that the ‘love story’ between Amy and Dorrigo was insipid and often cringeworthy. They came off as selfish jerks and unsympathetic.

On the other hand, I was riveted by the POW story. It was savage and brutal but it felt well done

I also enjoyed some of the POW WWII aftermath stories but some of them felt unnecessary and didn’t add anything to the book overall.

I think this book is worth reading for the war parts of the story and would have worked better as a novella without the cheesy romance.
