Review of Did You Ever Have a Family? by Bill Clegg

An impressive debut novel by a non-fiction author and literary agent.

The book starts off almost feeling like a short story collection with all of the different perspectives but it ends up coming together beautifully. All of the characters were interesting in their own way and added to the story instead of detracting. I felt especially connected to Lydia and June’s stories even though I have little in common with them.

The only gripe I had with this novel was the overuse of pronouns, especially in the chapters from a female’s perspective. I think Clegg could win an award for the number of times ‘she’ was used in one sentence.
